Dr. Bilal Philips

In the history of Islam, there have been huge number of scholars who contributed to spread and convey the message of Islam in different states around the world, whereby now in this current century, Muslims have significant number of scholars and Islamic reformists, which I’m going to propound brief information about Dr.Bilal Philip’s movements and reform.
Dr. Bilal Philips was born 1947 in Kingston, Jamaica. His parents are Christians. However, his family never force him to go to church. Once he became 11 years old, he moved to Toronto, Canada and grew up there. He grew up in the society that mostly populated by Euro-Canadians. It was a bit hard for him to live there due to the environment and the life style there. After several years, he and his family moved to Malaysia in the capacity of teachers and advisors to the ministry of education under the Canadian Colombo Plan. This was Bilal's first contact with a Muslim society. He was happy in that time to live in the Muslim majority country.  Nevertheless, He went back to Canada to continue his study in advised of his family. During his study, he learn about the ideology of Marxism-Leninism due to his interest in politics.  His journey to become a Muslim was quite long. In short, since he liked about the politics and the ideas about marxism and lennism, he started to read and study about islamic book. The book was written by Muhammad Qutub. Muhammad Qutub's book was a comparison of Islam, Socialism, Communism and Capitalism from a social, economic and moral point of view. He became convinced that Islam was the best way to bring about an economic and social revolution in Western society. Even though he faced many challenges to become muslim, he manage to accepted Islam in February 1972. (Dr. Abu Ameena Bilal Phillips , n.d.)[1]
In 1973 he started to study Islam at the Islamic University of Madeenah in Saudi Arabia.  He wanted to learn more about Islam from its classical sources instead of picking it up from cultural practices. He graduated his first degree in the Islamic Disciplines field at the Islamic University of Medina in 1979. (Alhassan, 2014)[2] After he completed his bachelor degree, he continued his master degree in the field of Islamic Theology in King Saud University in Riyadh and the he managed to finish it in 1985. During his study at Riyadh University, he presented some programs on Saudi Television Channel Two called ′Why Islam′ which focused on interviews with those who had converted to Islam from different backgrounds and their reasons for doing so.  Besides that, he began to teach Islamic education at the Minarat-ul-Riyadh school's English section and he made a curriculum for Islamic education in English. He made the curriculum in English version because the students in that time could be taught by the English medium. (Dr. Abu Ameena Bilal Phillips , n.d.) After completing his MA, then he worked in the religious department of the Saudi Arabian Air Force headquarters in Riyadh during the Gulf war (Desert Storm) where he lectured American troops on their bases in Bahrain and the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. Nearly 3,000 US troops embraced Islam while staying in Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia was the only place on the earth, where US forces did not leave war babies and where the liquor was rationed. In the tents, the troops openly discussed the Islamic tenets and practices. These Muslim troops are now the messengers of Islam in the US forces. Not only that, he also went to the USA to assist the converted soldiers together with an organization that is called Muslim Members of the Military that held conferences and activities to ultimately cause the establishment of prayer facilities for Muslims in all US bases internationally. (Gulf Today's Biography of, 2017)[3].
Furthermore, In 1994 he founded the first Islamic Information Center in Dubai. He has served as the head of the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at Preston University-Ajman, UAE; lecturer and director of the Da’wah and Education at Qatar Guest Center, Doha, Qatar; founder and head of the English medium Islamic studies department of Knowledge International University, Riyadh; founder and head of the College of Da’wah and Islamic Culture (English Section) at Omdurman Islamic University, Sudan; founder and head of Preston International University College in Chennai, India; and founder and Dean of the Islamic Studies Academy in Doha, Qatar. (BILAL PHILIPS - BIOGRAPHY, 2018)[4] In addition, he has translated, written and commented on above 50 published books on different Islamic topics, he also has edited and published 56 books and contributed in Islamic programs for many years in Riyadh channel 2tv, Sharjah TV for ten years, also presented in peace TV, Islam channel, UK, and lastly in the Deen show, Chicago, USA. Moreover, in the year 2002 Dr.Philips founded the Islamic studies department of Preston university, Ajman,UAE. From the other side, he headed and founded the Islamic studies in Doha in the year 2007 in Qatar which is an Islamic online university and has access over 207 countries in the word and it is offering free Islamic studies to over 100,000 students. Thus, because of his considerable struggles he has been among the most influential Muslims. More explicitly, concerning his contributions as it is mentioned above,  to the non-Muslim countries then it should not be left in said that Dr.Bilal converted fortunately 3000 US troops on his Islamic preaches a Da’wah in the desert of Saudi Arabia during the Gulf war. (founder, 2018)[5]
Concerning his contribution, Dr.Bilal since he is a Canadian, he start to spread the message of Islam in certain parts on Canada and other countries such as Philippines, which among all his contribution some were successful and some were unsuccessful, for example people stood against him and against his dawah to spread the message of Islam, such as Philippines, he has been accused of his extremist teaching from Islam and he has been barred of going to Philippines after being detained there. Furthermore, Dr.Bilal entered the Philippines last Thursday for a week-long speaking tour. Delima said Philips was arrested a day later at the request of the president’s office through the anti-terrorism council, on the basis he was likely inciting or recruiting people to join terror groups. (Dr. Abu Ameena Bilal Phillips , n.d.)[6] Besides that, He also visited the USA to help the converted soldiers and with the help of an organization called ′Muslim Members of the Military (MMM)′ held conferences and activities to ultimately cause the establishment of prayer facilities for Muslims in all US bases internationally. The US administration became obliged to request the Muslim community to suggest candidates for chaplainey which resulted in appointing Muslim chaplains in the US military in subsequent years. (Gulf Today's Biography of, 2017)[7]
Based on my findings, there are many accomplishments of Dr. Bilal Philips those are first, in 1980 – 1990, he taught Arabic and Islamic Studies at Manaret Riyadh Secondary School in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The second, in 1986 he started his first translation of the Friday Sermon into English in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia at the Mosque of Dr. Abdur Rahman Al-Luwaihiq. In the next two year in 1988, he Participated in the establishment of the first Islamic Center in Bat’ha, Riyadh, and his book “The True Religion of God”, was among the first books used to propagate Islam among foreign workers. After one year, he  published his first books about Polygamy in Islam, The Devils Deception, The Mirage in Iran, Khomeini: Moderate or Fanatical Shi’ite. Moreover, in 1990, he again published Islamic Studies Book 1, The Fundamentals of Tawheed, and The Evolution of Fiqh. Next, In the following year, he led a team of Islamic propagators which converted over 3,000 American soldiers in Khobar, Saudia Arabia, after the 1st Gulf War. During 1993 – 2003 he taught Arabic and Islamic Studies at the American University in Dubai as well as he Set up and ran the first Islamic Center in the UAE for Dar al – Birr Charity, in Dubai. After that, in 2003 – 2010 he consulted for and lectured at the Qatar Guest Center of Sh Eid Al Thani Charity, Doha, Qatar. In 2007 till now, he has been contributing his much time to International online University. The latest one of his accomplishment was he  Established an IOU Learning Center in Marawi City, Mindanao, Philippines. (founder, 2018)[8]
Despite of his accoplishment, he also faced many challenges to preaching islam in Non muslim majority country such as in Philpipnies. He had been scheduled to give a lecture in the Philippines but was taken into custody and then flown out. On landing in Canada, he said, customs officers interrogated him and examined his laptop and mobile phone for two hours. Then came questioning from agents of the RCMP and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service. (OFFICIAL STATEMENT OF DR BILAL PHILIPS ON HIS ARREST IN PHILIPPINES, 2014)[9] he also being suspected to support international terrorism movement. Thus he was banned to preach in several countries. even though he was slandered by many people, he will not stop to preaching and conveying islam in everywhere. (Canadian preacher’s lawsuit: We’ll meet in court, says Zamihan, 2017)[10]
Conclusion:
For having a better and wide Muslim community, Dr.Billal struggled and still struggling to persuade and encourage people in the non-Muslim countries. During his lifetime, he has been suffering and facing different kinds of challenges till now, such as banned from entering to Australia, and especially to Philippines due to his teachings, the emigration of Philippines detained him and give the order to his deportation. They were claiming that he indirectly encourages people for joining the extremist Islamic groups. Despite all these challenges, Dr.Billal is willingly continuing his Islamic dawah over many countries and particularly his Islamic teachings are being taught online over 207 different countries around the world.
